University of the Arts and Parkhurst Offer Community Supported Agriculture Program
Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania

Back to school at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia (UArts) is that much fresher! That’s because UArts and their dining services partner, Parkhurst Dining, started a community supported agriculture program (CSA) that gives Delaware Valley FarmShare, a partnership of local family farms in PA, NJ and DE, an opportunity to sell and deliver pre-purchased shares of their harvest to university staffers and faculty.

Supporting the local farming community is one of several sustainability efforts Parkhurst and its parent company, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group, are committed to through its FarmSource™ local purchasing program. The organization recently increased its local purchasing spends by 13%, totaling $23 million in purchases of food and beverages from local farms and producers of food.

“As members of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), we have the opportunity to speak to smaller farmers and partnerships that are interested in being involved with us, but their farms may be too small to fit into our FarmSource™ program,” said Jamie Moore, Parkhurst Dining director of sourcing and sustainability and PASA board
member director.

To date, more than 30 University staffers and faculty members have purchased shares from the CSA program which started in May, and will receive a box of farm goods every other week through the end of October. The cost is just $299 for the season, $23 per delivery week with a $23 registration fee.
