Celebrating Local Flavor and Community Connection Through Local Scene Partners

Celebrating Local Flavor and Community Connection Through Local Scene Partners

Across campus and workplace dining, expectations are changing.

In addition to convenience, today’s guests are looking for experiences that feel thoughtful, personal, and connected to their communities.  Dining programs are no longer purely functional; they’re an extension of place, culture, and identity.

When menus include familiar names, local businesses, and regional specialties, it signals something deeper than variety. These moments of recognition through local partnerships signal investment not only in food quality, but in community.

That can be a challenge in contract dining, where consistency, safety, and scale matter. However, when they’re done thoughtfully, local partnerships can deepen connection without complicating operations.

Through our Local Scene program, Parkhurst locations across our footprint intentionally partner with regional businesses that align with our values and standards while bringing something distinctly their own. These partnerships allow dining programs to feel rooted in place, without sacrificing reliability or consistency.

These Local Scene partners are central to the Parkhurst approach to localized dining. By bringing forward regional flavor, supporting local businesses, and building a sense of community pride, these partnerships allow us to deliver dining experiences that feel both rooted and refined without compromising our Culinary Gold Standards or operational excellence.

Local Flavor, Brought to Life

Local Scene partnerships show up in many ways, sometimes through interactive experiences and sometimes in moments of joy and surprise.

At Valparaiso University, students had the opportunity to learn directly from Pasukaru Sushi, a local Illinois-based sushi company. Rather than simply offering sushi on the menu, the experience invited students to a live, hands-on demonstration where they built their own rolls and engaged with the experts behind the cuisine.

Experiences like this create opportunities for students to connect. By integrating Local Scene partners into campus dining programs, Parkhurst transforms everyday dining into memorable, educational experiences that strengthen both guest engagement and community ties.

Creativity That Draws People Together

Other Local Scene partners create connections by turning everyday dining moments into something unexpected.

At Bard College, Dancakes introduced students to the artistry of pancake design through a live, made-to-order experience. Fully edible custom pancake art was created in real time, turning a routine breakfast into an interactive moment that invited participation, social sharing, and connection.

Food can do more than nourish, and when dining environments encourage curiosity and interaction, they naturally foster joy, engagement, and belonging.

Coffee, Connection, and Kindness on the Go

Local Scene partners don’t just show up in fixed dining locations. Sometimes, they roll right in.

When Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck visited Franklin College, it met a familiar campus challenge. Students and staff move through their day without many chances to slow down or connect. By serving handcrafted drinks straight from the truck, Travelin’ Tom’s met the campus community where it was convenient, turning an ordinary coffee break into a chance to pause and build community.

Partnership That Works on Every Level

Successful local dining partnerships require more than great food, they require alignment, trust, and operational flexibility.

At Parkhurst, we work closely with every Local Scene partner to ensure they meet our safety, quality, and operational expectations so our teams can confidently bring local flavor into their dining programs at scale. In return, our partners gain opportunities to grow sustainably and reach new audiences without losing what makes them special.

That intentional balance builds strong partnerships based on shared values, clear communication, and pride in doing things the right way.

Redefining Dining Through Local Connection

At its core, dining is about connection.

Connecting guests with local dining establishments creates a more personal experience, strengthens communities, and ensures programs truly reflect the places and people they serve.

Our Local Scene program showcases what’s possible when operational excellence and genuine partnership come together, creating thoughtful and memorable dining experiences.
